Focus of the day story:  The Bar Council has strongly attacked a plan by the Bar Standards Board (BSB) for the compulsory registration of youth court advocates, the first scheme of its type. Today's video story: The scandal deluging Hollywood producer Harvey Weinstein has deepened after US actress Rose McGowan publicly accused him of raping her. In a series of tweets, McGowan also accused Amazon Studio chief Roy Price of having ignored her when she made the allegation earlier. Amazon has put Price - himself accused on Thursday of sexually harassing a female producer - on leave of absence. Weinstein denies any sexual assaults. There was no comment from Price.


Focus of the day story: Legal aid lawyers have laid out plans to roll back the ‘damage caused by LASPO [Legal Aid, Sentencing and Punishment of Offenders Act 2012] cuts’. A manifesto published by the Legal Aid Practitioners Group proposes detailed reforms in 16 areas of law, ranging from actions against the state, to crime, to mental health and welfare benefits. Today's video story: Rajesh and Nupur Talwar, the parents of Aarushi Talwar, have been acquitted and will walk out of jail in a day or two. It was a brutal double murder case. Aarushi was found murdered and so too was the domestic help, 45-year-old Hemraj. The Talwars were accused of murder and sentenced to life in jail. Today, the Allahabad High Court said the CBI has failed to prove beyond reasonable doubt that the Talwar couple killed Aarushi and Hemraj. In cases where you depend on circumstantial evidence, the court said, the benefit of the doubt goes to the accused. And so the Talwars will be out of jail because the evidence presented against them doesn't stack up. But the big question remains - who killed Aarushi and who killed Hemraj? There is justice for Rajesh and Nupur Talwar today but is there any justice for Aarushi and Hemraj?


Focus of the day story:  Lawyers have been told to assume the government will not push through whiplash reforms before October 2018. Simon Stanfield, chairman of the Motor Accidents Solicitors’ Society, told the group’s annual conference today that he expects the original deadline will ‘certainly be missed’. The Ministry of Justice is tasked with pushing through the Civil Liability Bill, one of few pieces of legislation included in this year’s Queen’s speech. The bill, which is yet to be published, is expected to include a tariff for reduced RTA claims compensation and a ban on insurers making offers before victims have had a medical.
