McClure Naismith’s decision to call in the administrators in August was the third sad ending of its kind, following Semple Fraser in 2013 and Tods Murray, bought by Shepherd & Wedderburn in 2014. Over the last few years The Lawyer has anatomised the market reasons for the faltering performance of some Scottish firms and their vulnerability to takeover. Many of the problems spin out of the rise of the Scottish banks in the noughties, swollen out of all proportion, which brought fat years to the law firms.
